The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars Program at the University of California, San Francisco and Berkeley, draws upon the strengths of two campuses. The UC-San Francisco side of the program, based in the Center for Health and Community, offers the resources of an outstanding health sciences campus, with top-ranked schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy, as well as strong pre and post-doctoral programs. The UC-Berkeley side of the program, centered in the School of Public Health, utilizes the rich resources of a broad research-oriented arts and sciences campus.

Examining the links between social and economic exposures and cardiovascular risk factors

My research focus is examining the links between social and economic exposures and cardiovascular risk factors, in particular on the biological mechanisms through which household income level and changes in household income in early life result in the emergence of risk for cardiovascular disease. While much of my work is descriptive, through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation program I’ve begun work on the application of methods for causal inference from observational data, and in addition to cardiovascular risk factors generally, have been focusing in particular on understanding the causes of the development of obesity in children and adolescents.

I’ve worked primarily on three new projects as a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar.
